Our Vibrant Community

Giving Back

Alderney is all about community. As a small island we all look out for each other. Many organisations are aided by volunteers happy to give some of their time to make Alderney the special place that it is. For a small island of around 2,000 people we have an amazing variety of leisure pursuits and a large number of community clubs, associations and volunteering opportunities that reflect the warm and positive spirit that prevails here. Newcomers are always welcome whatever their interest, passion, or their desire to learn.

Ever considered being a volunteer firefighter or crewing the lifeboat? Supporting animal welfare services? Counselling? Being a tour guide? Ringing birds? Coaching? Helping the wildlife trust? Delivering meals on wheels? Ambulance driver? Dog walker? Part time librarian? Shopping for someone? These are just a few of the roles volunteers help with. It’s all part of the Alderney Spirit.

Participating

The island has a very proud tradition of punching above its weight and on a number of occasions has given its bigger Channel Islands rivals a run for their money in various team events. Our sports clubs include Amateur Boxing, Bowls, Cricket, Darts, Football, Golf, Rugby Union, Sailing, Shooting, Snooker, Squash, Table Tennis and Tennis. In addition there is Karate and Sea Swimming. Our community also enjoy a raft of annual events and festivities, ranging from Alderney Week, to the annual Fly In, Hill Climb and Alderney Coast Race.

If sports isn’t your thing,  there is no shortage of community clubs and associations. You can try your hand at Aerobics, Amateur Dramatics, Art and Design, Bell Ringing, Drumming, Felting, Flying, Horticulture, Line Dancing, Sea Angling, Yoga and more.

Whatever you decide to do, there’s no reason to be bored!

You can learn more about just a few of our sporting clubs and facilities on the Visit Alderney tourist site.

Spirituality

Religion and spirituality can be an important part of life on Alderney. The Parish Church of Saint Anne, positioned half way up Victoria Street is often referred to as ‘the cathedral church of the Channel Islands’. It is in the centre of Alderney and works with other Christian churches in Alderney to serve the resident population and visitors.

Cosmopolitan and Quirky

Alderney is a welcoming community, with people from all walks of life living side by side. Same sex marriage is legal and can be solemnised by celebrants in any location including cliff tops, beaches, boathouses and forts. In the pub you would be hard pressed to distinguish the millionairess from the milkmaid.

Delightful quirks abound. Where do you buy a pair of top notch gentleman’s shoes? You see Geoff at Reynards Jewellers. Where to find washing powder? McAllister's wet fish shop of course! A dining room table? Roger at REM Carpets. Order your phone and broadband? London House Homewares. You get the idea!
